With our naked eyes, we can see only a few thousands stars on a clear night. Yet scientists tell us that 200 billion stars are scattered throughout our galaxy, the Milky Way. When David wrote Psalm 8, he doubtlessly could not see all the stars we now know exist; still he marveled at the thousands he could see. Then he noted the vast contrast between the magnificent starry sky and his own puny size. He was even more astounded at the honor and value God bestowed upon humans. He expressed awe that God created us in God’s own image and gave us the privilege of managing His creation. He writes in Psalm 8, “When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?” One Bible version says, “You made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.” Physically, we are mere specks of dust in an immense universe, and yet God elevated us to manage His creation. What a privilege! Sadly, however, because of our alienation from God, we’ve done a lousy job of caring for the earth. But God promises that one day He will fully restore the earth’s glory. Until then, God is pleased to use us for His special purpose in the world when we submit our lives to Him and to His Son, Jesus Christ.
