When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad, he said it would totally change the way we communicate. So far, the iPad is changing communication. As welcome as this new technology is, it does little to change what comes out of our hearts and minds. Yet, it is our polluted hearts that contaminate our world. In Matthew 15:19, Jesus said, “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These,” He said, “are what defile you.” So the heart of our problem is the problem of our heart. Until we recognize that, and allow God’s Spirit to change our hearts, we will never see the end of violence, injustice, racism, and greed. We certainly can and must treat the symptoms, but cannot make real progress unless our hearts change. The Apostle Paul echoed Jesus’ teaching when he described in Ephesians 4 those whose hearts have not changed. He said, “Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.” Of course, even we who profess to follow Christ are not perfect, but with God’s help, we keep pursuing what God wants us to be—ever growing into the likeness of God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
