Mt. Augustus is said to be the largest rock in the world. It is located on the west coast of Australia—3600 feet high, 5 miles long, and 2 miles wide. That is a huge rock. Also, deep below the earth’s surface is solid bedrock. Rock has the reputation for strength and stability. Perhaps that is one reason the Bible refers to God as our Rock. In Psalm 95, the writer says, “Come let us sing to the LORD! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him. For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods. He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains. The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land, too. Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the LORD our maker, for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care.” The psalmist invites people to recognize that God is the source of our very existence, the source of our protection and provisions, and the One who controls our destiny. God’s Son, Jesus Christ, urges us to build our lives on Him—the Solid Rock. That is because the storms of life will often undermine our security. He is the best place to be and to stand both in this world and in the world to come.
