The sun is 93 million miles from the earth, yet without it, there would be no life here on earth. The sun is so valuable and awesome to sustain us that it is no wonder biblical writers often use it to help us get a glimpse of God’s glory. We read in Psalm 19, “God has made a home in the heavens for the sun; it bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding. It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race. The sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat.” The psalmist uses the sun to help us get a glimpse of God’s wisdom and power to create and sustain the entire universe. After stressing the absolute value of the sun for our physical well-being, he says just as the physical universe displays the majesty and glory of God’s creative genius, so God’s revealed word is equally vital. It helps us know God’s nature and character. The psalmist says, God’s word is perfect, it revives the soul; it is trustworthy, it makes us wise; it is right, it brings joy to the heart; it is clear, it gives insight for living; it is pure, it lasts forever. God’s word is more desirable than gold, sweeter than honey; it warns us of danger and promises a great reward for those who revere and obey it. Despite oft-heard suggestions to the contrary, let us never belittle the value of God’s written word.
