Thomas Edison Memorial Tower is the site of the largest light bulb in the world. The bulb is 14 feet tall, weighs 8 tons, and sits on top of a 118-ft tower. Every night, it lights up the darkness in Edison, NJ. It is hard to imagine a world without light bulbs. Yet light bulbs are poor substitutes for sunlight, and even sunlight cannot match the spiritual light that Jesus Christ is for the world. It was because of our spiritual darkness that God sent Him into the world to bring spiritual light. The Apostle John’s Gospel chapter 1 introduces Him this way: “In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it… The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.” Jesus himself said, “I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.” That’s John 12:46. As the light of the world, Jesus Christ illuminates God by His life, miracles, teachings, death, and resurrection. Jesus Himself said it, “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
