Teachers teach for a variety of reasons: They enjoy the company of students; seeing students make progress fills them with joy; they like the subjects they teach; they can be their own boss in the classroom. These reasons also apply for those who teach Christian education or spiritual formation. Yet another significant reason for teaching biblical truth is that it has the potential to produce eternal outcomes. That is why Jesus was so emphatic in stressing teaching in the Great Commission. After the Resurrection and before He left for heaven, Jesus told His disciples and us: “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” True followers of Christ recognize this as the primary mission of the church during His absence. Making disciples and teaching them to live out all Jesus taught should be a goal of every church. LIVING OUT what Jesus taught should be the ambition of every person who claims to be His follower.
