On December 5, 1996, Alan Greenspan gave a speech that to most people was boring and said little. But it shook stock markets around the world. He just hinted that the stock market might be overvalued and would soon start falling, and could wipe out gains. People listen when the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board speaks, because their money is at stake. In the same way, wise people listen when God speaks. Foolish people ignore what God says, to their great loss. Some spurn God’s word, thinking that God only wants to kill their joy. In reality, God wants to increase our joy, peace, and achievement. Here is what the psalmist says Psalm 119:1: “Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in his paths. You have charged us to keep your commandments carefully. Oh that my actions would consistently reflect your decrees! Then I will not be ashamed when I compare my life with your commands. As I learn your righteous regulations, I will thank you by living as I should! I will obey your decrees. Please don’t give up on me.” God’s word is a reliable lamp for our feet and a light for our paths. We cannot afford to ignore what God has spoken.
