A book by Bronnie Ware lists some regrets people speak about as they near death. Some regret not expressing their true feelings; some for not staying in touch with friends; and some for not allowing themselves to be happy. Those are interesting regrets, but in Luke Chapter 11, we read of Jesus speaking of an even greater missed opportunity. People kept bugging Him to give them a sign to prove He was the Messiah. He refused, but pointed them to historical events to show how they were missing the chance of a lifetime and would one day regret it. They had rejected Him as God’s Messiah and Savior of the world. He pointed to the prophet Jonah whose preaching warned the Assyrians of God’s coming judgment. The Assyrians repented and avoided God’s punishment. Yet Jesus had presented Himself as God’s Messiah—one who is far greater than Jonah—and they refused to accept Him. In doing so, they missed the chance of a lifetime. Some opportunities are too consequential to ignore. That includes God’s offer today. He offers to indwell, empower, and give eternal life to anyone who comes to Him. To have no regret, all we have to do is repent and accept him.
