Some people get great thrills from driving in the mountains. Not me—I prefer driving on level ground. But my fear of mountain driving helps me appreciate Psalm 121. The author took comfort knowing that God was with him as he made his way through hills and mountains to worship in Jerusalem. He wrote, “I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The LORD himself watches over you! The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD keeps you from harm and watches over your life. The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” The psalmist rejoiced that God who made the mountains—indeed made the entire universe—is the same God who guards His children all through life. While walking on an unstable road, the pilgrim’s foot could slip and he’d tumble down the mountain to his death, but God was watching. In life, we can make a bad decision that could ruin us, but if our trust in God is firm, He guards our steps and causes things to work for our good.
