According to Barna research, 65% of Americans believe co-habitation or Shacking up is appropriate. The most often justification by people who do it is that it gives them a chance sees whether or not they are compatible for each other. Other reasons include the financial benefit of two people living as cheaply as one, freedom of sexual intimacy, the desire for security, the fear of long-term commitment, and escape from home. Today, some 84% of Americans believe sex outside of marriage is OK, including even sex without knowing the person. Here is some bad news: God does not base his moral standards on polls. Here is what Jesus said about sex outside of marriage: “You have heard the commandment that said, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.“ The risks of extramarital sex are many, including emotional damage, physical disease, poverty, and the negative effects upon unwanted children. It’s pretty plain that God’s design of sexuality, love, and the benefits of a long-term marriage covenant is far better than the so-called sexual freedom today.
