Yogi Berra, notable catcher for the New York Yankees, was behind the plate when Hank Aaron came up to bat for the Braves. Yogi tried to distract Aaron by telling him to hold the bat so he could read the trademark. Aaron said nothing, but when the next pitch came he hit a home run. After rounding the bases and tagging home plate, he said to Yogi, “I didn’t come up here to read.” The home run king knew his purpose and did it well. When ancient Israel was in exile, false prophets offered the people false hope. God sent Jeremiah to give them genuine hope based on the truth of His purpose and plans for them. We read in Jeremiah chapter 29 where God said, “I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” God said His purpose at that time was that they should adjust to the conditions of exile. They should pray for seek the peace and prosperity of that city—without being shaped by its values. God said, “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” God kept His promise, preserved them, and restored them to their land. God has a plan for each of us. Our task is to seek Him and live according to His plan. God’s good plan satisfies Him, benefits others, and brings joy and fulfillment to us.
