Someone has identified several consequences when we disobey God. We become estranged from God, and if we never repent, we sin even more. We gain a bad reputation as evil and untrustworthy. We often develop distorted ideas of God. We become estranged from others, and have broken relationships. We often suffer the natural consequences of wrongdoing like sexually transmitted diseases. We can become a slave to Satan and face penalties from legal authorities. Ancient Israel repeatedly broke her covenant with God. Lamentations chapter 1 records her bitter anguish after the nation subsequently went into exile. Jeremiah wrote, “Jerusalem, once so full of people, is now deserted. She who was once great among the nations now sits alone like a widow. Once the queen of all the earth, she is now a slave. She sobs through the night; tears stream down her cheeks. Among all her lovers, there is no one left to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her and become her enemies. Judah has been led away into captivity, oppressed with cruel slavery.” All this happened because the nation disobeyed God and refused to repent. Still today, sin has its bitter consequences. Repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ is the only effective remedy.
