The World Health organization says 154,000 people die each day worldwide. That comes to 56 million people each year. One of our saddest experiences—if not the saddest—is saying our last goodbye to someone we deeply cared about. Funerals can be the epitome of grief, especially for people who have no hope beyond death. And yet it need not be, because Jesus Christ has vanquished death for those who have accepted Him as their Savior. Jesus stated this truth very forcefully as He spoke to Martha, whose brother had just died. We read this in John chapter 11: Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.” “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.” Jesus could not be more emphatic or clear in asserting that being united with Him by faith is the secret for an abundant life here on earth, but most importantly, He alone is the source of eternal life when our time on earth ends.
