One of Wintley Phipps’ favorite songs is Daryl Coley’s “My Soul Has Been Anchored.” Here are some of the words: “Though the storms keep on raging in my life; and sometimes it’s hard to tell the night from day; still that hope that lies within is reassured, as I keep my eyes upon the distant shore; I know He’ll lead me safely to that blessed place he has prepared—But if the storms don’t cease, and if the winds keep on blowing in my life, my soul has been anchored in the Lord.” This sentiment was doubtless in the Apostle Peter’s mind as he wrote his 2nd letter, chapter 3. After assuring us that the present world order would pass away and God’s new world order will surely come, he counsels believers to act this way: Make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight (from v. 14).Peace means treating others kindly and with justice. We foster peace not only among believers, but in society where the rights of others are often trampled upon, and sadly, God’s people often remain silent. But since we know we are on the winning side of history, and that beyond today’s turmoil lies God’s new heavens where righteousness will prevail, so we can strive to foster peace and justice today.
