Even though he often suffered from mental illness, in 1799, William Cooper wrote, “God moves in mysterious ways His wonders to perform. He plants his footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm.” Long before Cooper wrote this, Habakkuk found this to be true. The prophet was disturbed that people in his land were extremely arrogant and cared nothing for God and God’s way. So he asked God why he let people get away with such arrogance. God told him that Babylon was coming and would be God’s agent for punishing people. Habakkuk did not understand why God would use a nation more brutal than his nation to punish them. God assured him that He was preparing a third nation to punish Babylon. Based upon God’s certain word that the just would escape by faith, Habakkuk resigned himself to God’s promise to preserve the righteous. He said in Chapter 3:17, “Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!” People whose faith rests in God and in His Son Jesus Christ, can trust God’s love and care in good times and in bad times.
