Down through history, many American presidents’ have prayed when they faced tough decisions. They testify that God, who created and sustains everything, could give wisdom if they humbly asked for it. They believed like ancient King Hezekiah of Judah. He was facing a major crisis. The Assyrian king Sennacherib had invaded his country sent him a threatening message: Surrender or I will destroy you and Jerusalem. In the message, the Assyrian king listed all the nations he had already conquered. He assured Hezekiah that Judah was next. When Hezekiah received the message, he went up to the temple, spread it out before the LORD, and prayed. In his prayer he said, “It is true, O LORD, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all these nations. But of course they could destroy them because the gods of these nations were not gods at all — only idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands. Now, O LORD our God, rescue us from his power; then all the kingdoms of the world will know that you alone, O LORD, are God.” God answered Hezekiah’s prayer by killing 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night. God’s answer to our crisis may or may not be as dramatic as it was for Hezekiah. At the very least, God assures us — His children — that He is with us and will sustain us through our crisis. Our part is to trust Him and obey Him.
