Mission statements help keep businesses, churches, or individuals focused on the main thing. Experts say that unless we have a clearly defined mission statement, we can waste our efforts and energy and be less successful. That is doubtless why the apostle said, “This one I do, forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” It is perhaps also the reason David, when he was transferring the kingship to his son, prayed explicitly for one primary objective. He prayed that his son and the people would be single-minded in their devotion to God; that they would be single-minded in living by the values David had adopted. Notwithstanding his own failures, David pleaded to God for his son and his people. He prayed, “O LORD, the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes. Give my son Solomon the whole-hearted desire to obey all your commands, laws, and decrees.” David knew that even though he could not guarantee the success of his son on the throne, he knew that success lay in his son faithfully adhering to God’s word. Let us pray for our children in the same way David prayed for his son and his people.
