A volcano erupted in Italy in B.C. 79, wiping out the entire city of Pompeii. People of all ages were buried alive from the sudden flow of molten ash. Yet Roman writers record that they did not have to die. They died because they ignored weeks of rumbling and spewing smoke that preceded the eruption. The Bible teaches that one day God will destroy all evil and evil systems in the world. While the Bible does not give us all the details, it teaches that it will happen. Only those who are safe in their relationship with God will escape catastrophe. God does not reveal this to scare people but to alert us. His primary purpose is to assure His people that despite all the trouble we may face in the world, we will be victorious in the end. In Revelation 15, John speaks of this coming destruction, but describes God’s people as holding victorious harps and singing, “Great and marvelous are your works, O Lord God, the Almighty. Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations. Who will not fear you, Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous deeds have been revealed.” This truth especially ought to encourage God’s people to serve him faithfully. It should remind all of us that a day of accountability is coming. We should all take heed to what God has revealed.
