No one really knows when the Big California earthquake will strike, but experts are convinced that it will come, and when it does, buildings will collapse, thousands of people will die, and an enormous cleanup will follow. That’s why we hope it never happens. Yet the Bible teaches that another dreadful day is certain to come—the day when God reveals His righteous judgment. Paul wrote in Romans Chapter 2: “[God] will judge everyone according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil… For God does not show favoritism.” Later, the Apostle explains that, in fact, we all fall short of living up to God’s righteous standards. That’s why God provided a basis for Him to forgive us of all our sins. God sent His Son to suffer in our place. By accepting Him as our Savior, we can escape the consequences of our sin. So even though we know a day of accountability and judgment is certain to come, we rest firmly in God’s promise that He will preserve those who trust and obey Him.
