Back in 1997, we all watched as Michael Jordan, sick with the flu, made a shot that helped the Chicago Bulls win basketball championship number five. With four titles already, Michael later told a reporter what motivated him that year. He said he won so a new coach who had never worn a championship ring could get one. Michael was selfless but his self-giving hardly compares to God’s selfless motive in saving the world. Psalm 98 tells us why God plans to conquer the forces of evil, and bring salvation to His people. It is God’s faithful, loyal love. That’s what assures us of God’s saving presence now and forever. One day, God will rid creation of all pain, poverty, war, suffering, hatred, and exploitation. John, in Revelation Chapter 21 says that in the New Jerusalem, God will wipe away all tears. There will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain. Psalm 98 anticipates that day and invites us to “Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a wonderful victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power! The LORD has announced his victory and has revealed his righteousness to every nation!” Yes, a new world is coming one day. That’s why God invites us to accept His Son as our Savior. And until that day comes, He calls us to use the abilities and resources He gives us to share this Good News, and to make a difference in our world.
