Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. It rises more than 29,000 feet above sea level. Mt. Sinai is a much smaller mountain but may be better known. That is because Mt. Sinai is where God revealed himself to the ancient nation of Israel. The newly freed people arrived there three months after leaving Egypt. At Mt. Sinai, God set forth the terms of the covenant He made with them. We read in Exodus 19 where God said, “I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” God further told them, “If you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people. You shall be to me a kingdom of priests.” As God’s adopted nation, their mission was to transmit God’s righteous values to the rest of the world. They would also be God’s channel for bringing God’s Son into the world. The people agreed to keep this covenant but broke it repeatedly. Despite their failure, however, God kept His promise to Abraham and David. The record of God’s dealings with that ancient nation constitutes our Bible, God’s word. Just as He had promised, God caused His Son to become human. Jesus Christ revealed God to us more fully. At another mountain — Mt. Calvary — He died to atone for our sins. Now God forgives the sins of all who accept Him as their Savior. God adopts them into His family and grants them eternal life.
