Schools like Hampton University and Wheaton College offer students Liberal Arts degrees. The logic of it is that when a student is competent in core courses like history, English, and Social Science, they can find jobs in a variety of settings. Paul urged Timothy to embrace values that apply in any service for the Lord. He urged Timothy to pursue spiritual disciplines. He wrote this in 2 Timothy 2: “In a wealthy home, some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use. If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work. Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth.” As we live and serve our Lord today, we can use all the values Paul urged young Timothy to pursue.

I am trying to say that just as liberal arts colleges seek to prepare students to become competent in core disciplines like history, English, etc, so the Scriptures encourage us to be competent in spiritual disciplines. This will enable us to be ready to serve the Lord in a variety of situations. These disciplines include love, faithfulness, etc.as Paul spelled out for Timothy. When a person is well rounded morally and spiritually, he or she can serve in a variety of capacities
