C. S. Lewis once said, “A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship him, than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word darkness on the walls of his cell.” Lewis knew that humans are too puny to detract from God’s majesty. God himself revealed this to His prophet Isaiah many years ago. Isaiah’s people were in captivity because they had repeatedly violated God’s covenant with them. The prophet had warned them that unless they changed, they would go into exile. The people refused to listen and lived in exile for 70 years. When 70 years were over, God kept His promise to let them return home. God then said His righteous servant, the Messiah, would one day came and offer salvation to the entire human race. God declared that until the Messiah arrived, people could find favor with God through faith and obedience. In any age, humble faith is the key to having favor with God. No one can curry God’s favor with arrogance and insincere worship. We read in Isaiah Chapter 66, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word.” True humility leads to the cross where Jesus Christ paid for our sins. All who place their faith in Him receive God’s eternal favor.
