Pet dogs often wait eagerly at the front door, waiting for their masters to come home. When the owner walks into the house, the pet’s joy is unbounded. According to the book of Proverbs, we should have excitement like that toward wisdom. Wisdom is the proper use of knowledge. The Bible stresses that the source of wisdom is reverence for God. In Proverbs Ch. 8, the writer personifies wisdom as God’s agent when He designed and created the universe. Who has not marveled at the beauty of a sunset, the darling face of a baby, or the complexity of our universe? Scientists are forever trying to understand how our universe works. Since God’s wisdom designed, created, and sustains the universe, we cannot fully understand its workings without God’s wisdom and grace. We cannot successfully navigate life apart from God’s wisdom. That is why in the book of Proverbs wisdom says–“Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the LORD.” We have two choices—the way of life and the way of death. Wisdom leads to life; the rejection of wisdom leads to death. Surely, we should be more diligent seeking God’s wisdom than a pet that waits for his master to come home.
