UMI joins many others in mourning the loss of the Reverend Henry Soles, Jr., who moved from the east coast to the Midwest at the invitation of UMI founder Dr. Melvin Banks. Reverend Soles served as the initial editor of UMI, creating the very first publication of UMI, Inteen. After only one year of its existence, the Association of Christian Publishers awarded Inteen as the number 1 publication in the category of Christian education.
Reverend Soles went on to serve as chaplain for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Bears where he mentored and counseled athletes. He also served in a number of leadership roles at the Dupage AME church, the Dupage Prayer Breakfast, and other organizations striving for social justice.
