Yuma, Arizona and northeast Africa are two of the sunniest places on earth. Yuma has 4,000 hours of sunshine each year. Northeast Africa along the Nile River has 3,800 hours of sun annually. Sunlight has many benefits. Yet the Bible speaks of a coming day when sunlight will give way to another source of light. To convey this amazing truth, God’s prophet Isaiah compared that coming day with our sun and moon—our known sources of light. In Isaiah chapter 60, the prophet says of that coming day, “No longer will you need the sun to shine by day, nor the moon to give its light by night, for the LORD your God will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun will never set; your moon will not go down. For the LORD will be your everlasting light.” God promises that one day His presence will replace the light of the sun and moon. His presence will banish all imperfections and be the source of light for all who dwell there. Those who have chosen to accept God’s invitation of life in His Son will live in that eternal city. God says that in the New Jerusalem, there will be no violence, but peace and righteousness will prevail. It is all yet to come, but the anticipation not only stirs our imagination, it inspires us to persevere and remain steadfast, knowing that our efforts to promote God’s kingdom agenda today are not in vain.
