The YWCA, short for The Young Women’s Christian Association began in 1855. Today it has more than 25 million members in 122 countries. Its mission is “dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.” The YWCA along with the YMCA began in order to foster communication among followers of Christ and to practice the principles Jesus taught. Jesus reaffirmed the righteous behavior God’s prophets stressed during Old Testament times. The prophet Amos in chapter 5 wrote this, “Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live! Then the LORD God of Heaven’s Armies will be your helper, just as you have claimed. Hate evil and love what is good; turn your courts into true halls of justice. Perhaps even yet the LORD God of Heaven’s Armies will have mercy on the remnant of his people.” Today, God wants His people not only to receive and enjoy His forgiveness of their sins to gain eternal life. He wants us to speak out and work on behalf of all who are mistreated. This too is a part of our Lord’s Kingdom agenda.
