The U.S. has awarded more than 3,500 Medals of Honor. African Americans have received 88 of them. The honor recognizes what soldiers have done beyond their call of duty; it carries with it a number of benefits. God tested Abraham’s faith and obedience by asking him to sacrifice his only son. Without hesitating, Abraham took his son to the place God directed; and after building an altar, he tied up his son, placed him on the altar, and raised his knife to slay his only son by his wife, Sarah. When God saw his readiness to kill his only son, God stopped him. God then promised by taking an oath to reward his faith and bless him immensely. We read this in Genesis Chapter 22: “This is what the LORD says: Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because you have obeyed me.” Abraham’s example teaches us that faith obeys; faith surrenders its best to God and waits on God to provide; and faith accepts the reality that sometimes God does not provide until He has tested our faith.
