The Supreme Court ruled recently that prayer at public meetings is legal. Some residents had sued to prevent praying at town meetings. Most Christians agree with the Supreme Court’s decision—people should have the freedom to pray at public meetings. Christians also hold that people have the freedom to believe whatever they wish. They may choose to believe what is not true, buy they have that freedom. At the same time, Christians insist that in Jesus Christ God revealed His nature, His character, and His plan to save us from our sin. We read this in the Bible book of Hebrews, chapter 1. “Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.” This text teaches that Jesus Christ is the one God appointed to reveal God’s nature, His character, and His plan to redeem humanity. So while we strive for peace in our multicultural society, we need not give up our identity as followers of Jesus Christ our Lord.
