The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is situated on a four-acre site in D.C. along the Nation’s Mall near the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. The monument honors Dr. King’s legacy; a tribute to the freedom, opportunity, and justice he fought for throughout his lifetime. Memorials provoke respect, appreciation and inspiration toward a better future. It’s why Joshua directed ancient Israel to set up a memorial after they crossed the Jordan River on dry land. We read in Joshua Ch 4 that at Gilgal “Joshua piled up the twelve stones taken from the Jordan River.” He said to the people, “In the future your children will ask, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Then you can tell them, ‘This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across. He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord’s hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever.” Still today, God’s past blessings should inspire us to worship and serve Him faithfully.
