The American system of government is democratic. That means, we get to choose our leaders. We value that freedom to choose. It comes from God our Creator. It is at least a part of what we mean when we refer to the image of God in us. But if freedom of choice is a God-given privilege in selecting human leaders, how much more is it a privilege in deciding whether to follow Jesus the Christ? Jesus set forth His credentials to be worthy of our trust. He declared himself to be God in the flesh so He gives us flawless truth. He offered up his life to atone for our sins. He arose from the dead to affirm His credibility. He alone possesses the right to say His followers, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Jesus has impeccable credentials, it’s no wonder many now gladly choose to follow Him.
