Jesus once said, “What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.” Those words have cheered many people in times of trouble. Yet long before Jesus came, David knew he could trust God in his desperate situation. Ziphites had betrayed him and told Saul where to find him. Knowing Saul intended to kill him, David pleaded with God to protect him. Yet during his bitter pleading, David’s fear suddenly changed to confidence as he meditated on God’s love and sufficiency. We read this in Psalm 54: “Come with great power, O God, and rescue me! Defend me with your might. Listen to my prayer, O God. Pay attention to my plea. For strangers are attacking me; violent people are trying to kill me. They care nothing for God. But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive! May the evil plans of my enemies be turned against them. Do as you promised and put an end to them. I will sacrifice a voluntary offering to you; I will praise your name, O LORD, for it is good. For you have rescued me from my troubles and helped me to triumph over my enemies.” Notice how in David’s prayer he turns from pleading to praising. That comes from spending time in God’s presence. Jesus assures us God’s care for us is far greater than His care for sparrows.
