Traffic expert say speed laws have great benefits. They save lives because at lower speeds drivers can see more, can stop faster, and if an accident occurs, it’s less severe. They even say it’s not slower speed that makes a trip longer, it is the stop signs. Lower speeds help grow businesses because people stop to shop. These benefits and more are why cities pass laws to lower speed. Yet laws in themselves do not make the difference; they show us our failures and what we need to do to fix the problem. That is also true with God’s laws. They show us our faults but have no power to get us to do right. The Apostle Paul wrote this in Galatians Ch. 3, “Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins.” “If the law could give us new life, we could be made right with God by obeying it. But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s promise of freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ.” So the Bible is clear—the 10 Commandments help us know our faults, but it takes faith in Christ to receive forgiveness, favor with God, and power to do right.
