Years ago, some Germans were afraid to go near a high mountain. They thought a ferocious giant lived at the top of the mountain. Skeptics found out that people only saw the giant at sunrise and sunset, and only on bright days; so they finally realized that the people were afraid of their own shadows. But when Jesus was here on earth, people did not need to doubt Jesus’ identity—who He is—even though some did. We read this in Matthew 3, “Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. But John tried to talk him out of it. ‘I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,’ he said, ‘so why are you coming to me?’ But Jesus said, ‘It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.’ So John agreed to baptize him. After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.’” So the Scriptures indicate that three credible witnesses here testified to the identity of Jesus Christ: John the Baptist, God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit. Since we have such impeccable witnesses about the identity of Jesus Christ as God’s Son, it is foolish to ignore His teaching, the salvation He offers, and His claim for our loyalty.
