Every few years, news stories announce that explorers in or around Turkey have found Noah’s Ark. While some reports claim they are certain they have found it, other scholars are skeptical. Some even say the reports are deliberately misleading to discredit the Bible. Skeptics would like nothing more than to discount the biblical record that wickedness can bring God’s judgment. Of course, such conflicting reports do not upset mature Christians. We believe the Scriptures are God-breathed and therefore, accurate. Finding the ark may satisfy our curiosity, but has no bearing on the reliability of God’s word. The Bible reports that Noah was a man of faith who lived in history. At God’s command, he built an ark and lived on it for just over a year while a flood destroyed all life on earth. We read in Genesis 8:1 that as the waters subsided, “God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and livestock with him in the boat. He sent a wind to blow across the earth, and the floodwaters receded. The underground waters stopped flowing, and the torrential rains from the sky stopped. So the floodwaters gradually receded from the earth.” Noah’s historical experience is a vivid reminder that God judges wickedness. Yet today, He offers to preserve those who repent of their sins and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ.
