Here is what Sir William Ramsey, a world famous historian, once said about Luke, the author of Luke and Acts: He said, “Based on my knowledge of history, I have no respect for Luke as a historian.” He then went to the Middle East to prove Luke and the Bible wrong in its history. When he returned home, he wrote the book, Luke, the Beloved Physician. In that book, he proclaimed Dr. Luke to be one of the world’s foremost historians. Luke was a trustworthy writer of history. God uses trustworthy people for his highest purposes. That is why God used Samuel in such a notable way. Samuel’s mother dedicated him to the Lord, even before he was born. As Samuel grew, he proved to be a man of great integrity. God gave him a sobering message that Eli and his sons would have a tragic end. He faithfully gave that message to Eli. From that point on, Samuel served his nation as a prophet, a priest, a teacher, and a counselor. We read in 1 Samuel 3, “As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him, and everything Samuel said proved to be reliable. And all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba in the south, knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD.” Someone has said, God today would do more for his people if he could find more people willing to listen and trust Him as Samuel did. Perhaps that will be you.
