With the largest telescope scientists now have—the Hubble—they believe the universe is 13.8 billion years old. By 2018, they expect to build another telescope that will be 100 times more powerful than the Hubble. Even then they will never be able to fathom the immensity of God, or probe His wisdom, love, and power. We are limited by what God chooses to reveal to us. The prophet Isaiah gives us a glimpse of God’s greatness with of series of questions, found in Isaiah chapter 40. He asks, “Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale? Who is able to advise the Spirit of the LORD? Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him? Has the LORD ever needed anyone’s advice? Does he need instruction about what is good? Did someone teach him what is right or show him the path of justice?” These questions simply point toward God’s immensity. God uses questions like these to describe Himself for our benefit. He wants to assure us that just as we can never probe the depths of His nature and being, we will never come to the limits of His capacity to act on our behalf. That is why He invites us to come to Him, rely on Him, and live only for Him.
