The I-Teach program has an ambitious goal. It aims to give a quality education to children whose families have never gone to college. One aspect of the program is to urge graduates to go back into their communities to lead and teach others. They claim that after ten years, 75% of the students earned Masters Degrees and did, in fact, go back to lead and help their communities. In Psalm 72, the psalmist describes qualities of an ideal leader. He prays that God would provide a leader who was concerned about justice and righteousness for the poor and oppressed. Here is a portion of the prayer: “Give your love of justice to the king, O God, and righteousness to the king’s son. Help him judge your people in the right way; let the poor always be treated fairly. … Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors. May they fear you as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon remains in the sky. Yes, forever!” Of course many Bible scholars believe this prayer was perhaps originally for King Solomon, but it also predicts what Christ will do when He returns. He will right all wrongs and rule with integrity. But until He arrives, God’s people foster justice for the poor and moral righteousness for everyone.
