Points of Light is an initiative started by President George H.W. Bush back in 1989. He instituted the program to urge people from all walks of life to use their time, talents, resources, and voices to solve social problems all over the world. Of course, volunteerism did not start with President Bush. He saw the urgent need of getting citizens to do what government could not do. The program has recruited millions of volunteers worldwide to make a difference in the lives of others. Our Lord made it clear to His followers that we are salt and light in the world. The good deeds we do can point others to the source of our illumination-even to Christ, who is God’s life and light for the world. Here are Jesus’ words from Matthew 5, “You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden… Let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” We shine for Christ in many ways: We can use our voice, our vote, our time, our talents, and resources to help the needy. We engage, not to earn salvation, but in grateful response to all God has done and is doing for us.
