An old story tells about a young man who expressed undying love for his lover. But when she asked him when she would see him again he said, “I’ll be back tomorrow—if the creek don’t rise.” It was his way of saying, “My love for you depends …” We’re glad God’s love isn’t like that—having to wonder whether or not He will fulfill His promises to us. His track record is faultless. One promise God made to ancient Israel illustrates how solid His commitments are. Even while they were exiled in a foreign land for violating their covenant, God still confirmed His promise to them, recorded in Isaiah Chapter 54, “The mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken, says the LORD, who has mercy on you.” Of course, we seldom know when or how God will fulfill His promises to us, but we can be sure He will. Our challenge is to study His word to discover what He has promised, and then to rest in confidence that in the way and at the time He chooses, He will come through for His children.
