Since 1901, the Nobel Committee has awarded 567 Nobel Prizes. These prizes recognize the achievements people make in the areas of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, peace, and more recently, economics. Such recognitions are worthy of praise. Yet the praise due God for all the benefits we receive from Him is far greater. David knew that. It is why in Psalm 103, he says, “Let all that I am [my body, soul, and spirit] praise the LORD… praise his holy name.” Praise is what we do in recognition of God as the source of our existence, the source of our wellbeing in life, and as the One who controls our destiny. David tells us why he is so fervent in praising God. He says God “forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s! The LORD gives righteousness and justice to all who are treated unfairly… For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. The LORD is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.” We may not realize it, but when we fail to recognize and praise God for His blessings and benefits, we are taking the first step in backsliding.
