Nearly half of the world’s population lives on less than $2 a day. Of these, 1 billion live on less than $1 a day. Experts call these the desperately poor. They live in places like in Haiti, India, Mexico, the Philippines, and Africa. They have no running water, no medical care, nor education. Most survive by eating at garbage dumps. The Bible is not silent about God’s concern for the poor. He counts on us to help them, especially us whom He has redeemed. Psalm 113 speaks of God’s concern for the poor. We read in verse 7, “Who can be compared to the LORD our God, who is enthroned on high? He stoops to look down on heaven and earth. He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He sets them among princes even the princes of his own people!” The text informs us that even though God is high and lifted up in power and authority, He is so full of grace that He stoops to our level to show His concern for the poor and to lift them up. God’s desire is not just that we visit them in their poverty and leave them there. He wants to see them lifted out of poverty. Since that is so, assisting the poor should be a high priority for us today. That’s because Christ has saved us. God has lifted us to a position alongside of His Son. We are now His ambassadors. He charges us to express His love to everyone, especially those who are desperately poor.
