In 1895, Mary McLeod Bethune graduated from Moody Bible Institute. Rejected as a missionary because of her color, she went south and worked tirelessly for justice and global equality. In one prayer, she pleaded, “We know that this world is filled with discordant notes, but help us, Father, to so unite our efforts that we may all join in one harmonious symphony for peace and brotherhood, justice, and equality of opportunity for all men.” Prayer and work still go hand in hand. We read in Hebrews chapter 4, “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Jesus qualifies to be our High Priest because unlike Adam, when Jesus was tested, He fully obeyed His Father, even volunteering to die in our place. By His perfect obedience, including dying for us, Jesus revealed His qualifications to rule over heaven and earth. Since He is our Great Intercessor with God the Father, and since He loves us and understands our human condition, we can all the more pray to and depend upon Him for all our earthly needs.
