The statement “decisions determine destiny” has some truth in it. We do not choose when or where we are born, nor do we choose our parents. But we can choose what college to attend, our job or career, our life mate, where we will live, when and where to take a vacation, etcetera etcetera. We make decisions all the time and we know that bad decisions can result in bad outcomes. Paul the apostle knew that too. It’s why as he left on his second journey to take the Gospel abroad, he was careful to follow the Lord’s guidance. He knew his mission was to take the Gospel to the Gentiles, but he wanted to be sure of where he should go. He left Antioch to revisit churches he had established in Asia Minor. Leaving there, he headed north, but the Holy Spirit said “No.” Then we read this in Acts 16: “That night Paul had a vision: A man from Macedonia in northern Greece was standing there, pleading with him, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us!’ So we decided to leave for Macedonia at once, having concluded that God was calling us to preach the Good News there.” God uses various ways to guide His children—His Word, His Spirit, our circumstances, our intuition, and the counsel of godly people. But the most important factor for knowing God’s will is our willingness to do it once we know it.
