According to one source, our country signed more than 500 treaties with Native Americans and has “broken, changed, or nullified every one of them.” Whether we consider such failures to be intentional or not, it underscores our human weakness as promise keepers. It makes us glad that God, who is unlike us, keeps every promise He has made. Here is one He made to the patriarch Abraham, recorded in Genesis chapter 12: “The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” God made that promise to Abraham 4,000 years ago. His promise to bless all families of the earth through Abram was His commitment to offer salvation to the entire human race. Today, God is doing just that with Abraham’s descendant Jesus Christ, who paid our sin debt. If God ever broke that promise, we would be pitiful, hopeless. But God’s holy character is such that He cannot go back on His word. And all who desire to be God-like will do their best to keep the promises they make to others.
