No one knows exactly how many stars exist in our universe. Some experts estimate that there are about a billion trillion of them. Whatever their number, they reflect the wisdom and power of God who created them and placed them there. God existed before the stars and will exist into the eternal future. Moses, who wrote Ps. 90, celebrates the eternality of God saying, “Lord, through all generations you have been our home! Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and world, from beginning to end, you are God.” Moses then contrasts God’s eternal existence with our weak and fleeting life span. Our life span, Moses says, is as brief as a few night hours, as transitory as a dream, as short-lived as flowers that spring up in the morning but wither by evening. Moses knows that our brief life span is the result of our alienation from God our Creator. Moses calls us to realize that we are accountable to God. He exhorts us to realize the brevity of life. He pleads with us to let God teach us daily how to live wisely. The Bible teaches that while our bodies will turn to dust, our souls will continue to live. Only those who make peace with God during this brief lifespan can count on an eternal future. We make peace with God by placing our faith in God’s Son.
