Somebody once said we Christians often crucify ourselves between two thieves. One thief is our undue focus on past failures; the other is our undue worry about the future. Yet anxiety can damage our faith, keep us from doing our best, affect the way we treat others, and diminish our faith in God. Jesus tells us how to deal with worry. In Matthew Chapter 6, He urges us not to worry about daily needs. He uses two vivid examples to explain what he means. He says, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” He asks, “Are you not much more valuable to Him than they are? And why do you worry about your clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” Jesus then draws this logical conclusion: “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you?” Jesus says we worry because we do not realize how precious we are to God; how capable God is; and how caring He is for us. Our Lord gives this antidote for worry: Focus on kingdom priorities today, and realize that when our tomorrow comes, God will have a solution for it.
