Sailing in a certain Italian harbor can be hazardous. To avoid a wreck, ships align themselves perfectly with three lights. When the captain sees three lights as one, he can safely proceed up the narrow channel. God also provides three harbor lights to guide us: God’s Word is an objective standard of righteousness; God’s Holy Spirit is our subjective witness; and circumstances are God’s providence. When these three align perfectly, they assure us of God’s guidance. Isaiah gave ancient Israel God’s word to assure them of God’s guidance. We read in Isaiah 58, “Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors! Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.” The text informs us that there is a relationship between obedience to God and His guidance. God calls us, not only to have a vertical relationship with him by faith in His Son; but also, as a way of life, to show concern for others. When we do, we can count on God’s guidance when we ask Him for direction.
