One day, a poor Scottish farmer heard a boy screaming for help. He ran to a nearby mud hole and saw a boy mired in mud and water, about to drown. The farmer saved him. The next day the boy’s father came by. He offered to pay the farmer for saving his son. The farmer refused, saying he could not take money for saving the boy. At that moment, the farmer’s own son came to the door. The rich man said, “I’ll make you a deal. Let me provide your son with an education, and I am sure he will grow up to be a man like you.” The farmer agreed, and his son went on to graduate from medical school; that son discovered Penicillin. The story illustrates how one good deed can lead to another. Proverbs 11: 27 expresses that principle this way, “If you search for good, you will find favor; but if you search for evil, it will find you!” And, again, in verse 30, “The seeds of good deeds become a tree of life.” In Matthew 7, Jesus spoke the same truth this way, “You will be treated as you treat others.” In other words, when we show kindness to others, kindness comes back to us–Kindness begets kindness. Jesus said, “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.” Our world is in desperate need of good old fashion kindness. God’s people, motivated by Christ’s love for us, must be lights to show the way.
