Historians believe certain events change the course of history—like the alphabet, the invention of the printing press, and certainly the birth of Christ. The father of John the Baptist was not an expert of history, but the Holy Spirit filled him. The angel Gabriel had told him that his son, John, would introduce the Messiah; but Zechariah perceived the significance of the Messiah’s coming. He would change history forever. In his prayer, found in Luke Chapter 1, Zechariah says of his son, “You my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord. You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins. Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.” Zechariah knew that when the Messiah arrived, He would offer salvation to the whole world. Just as Zechariah predicted, the Messiah came, taught us eternal truth, died for our sins, and rose again. Today He lives in heaven, but also He lives within the hearts of all who accept Him. One day He will return in person to establish His kingdom on earth. He will rule until every knee bows to Him and every tongue confesses that He is Lord.
